December 2024: : The Spanish Journal Revista Canaria de Estudios Ingleses is publishing a Special Issue on the topic “Decolonising Affective Relationships in Contemporary Romantic Narratives”. The journal welcomes full articles, reviews, interviews with authors and scholars on romance, short articles by postgraduate students and creative writing pieces. Deadline for submission of a 300-500 word abstract: 15th March 2025 to cristina.cruz@uib.es and perezirene@uniovi.es. Submission of full articles (6000-8000 words), interviews, reviews or shorter pieces. December 2025.

November 2023: Members of the team will participate in the 2023 AEDEAN Conference hosted by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 8-10 November 2023. Conference programme can be found here

October 2023: The research seminar “The Affective Politics of Romance: from Research to the Classroom” will take place at the University of the Balearic Islands, on 26 October. The seminar is co-organised in collaboration with members of the research project “Cinema and Environment: Affective Ecologies in the Anthropocene”

July 2023: Mariana Ripoll Fonollar successfully defended her doctoral thesis “Wording Deeds: the figure of the suffragette in contemporary British fiction” at the University of the Balearic Islands. The thesis analyses a corpus of historical novels, including historical romances, set in the context of the British suffrage movement and featuring suffragette protagonits.

June 2023: Several members of the team will participate in the next International Conference of the Association for the Study of Popular Romance (IASPR), which will be hosted by the University of Birmingham, UK 28-30 June 2023. The topic of the conference is “Romance Revitalised“. More information can be found here

April 2023: The international peer-reviewed open-acess journal Esferas Literarias will feature a special thematic section on New Romantic Narratives for the Twenty-First Century edited by Paloma Fresno Calleja. Contributions can be written in English or Spanish. Call for Papers. Deadline for submissions: 1 September, 2023.

March 2023: Jayashree Kamblé’s upcoming book Creating Identity
The Popular Romance Heroine’s Journey to Selfhood and Self-Presentation will be published by Indiana University Press (2023). More information can be found here.

December 2022: The 2022 Contemporary Women’s Writing Essay Prize has been awarded to Cristina Cruz-Gutiérrez for her article “Postromanticizing the Nigerian Nation in Chinelo Okparanta’s Under the Udala Trees and Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀’s Stay with Me”, which will be shortly published in the Oxford journal Contemporary Women’s Writing.

October 2022: The next EASA Conference will be held at the Univeristy of the Balearic Islands (6-8 September 2023) with the topic: “Australia from the Heart: Envisioning Affective, Environmental and Material Reparations”. Conference website. Deadline for abstracts: 15 April, 2023.
